Library photography 2021
Library functions are being impacted severely by the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health responses to the virus. I applaud the libraries and their patrons who make the effort to keep these shared spaces open and safe. Photographing libraries during these times provides some unique challenges and opportunities. From a documentary perspective it is important to include all the signs, directions and artefacts that reflect the pandemic. However, from an artistic point of view the proliferation of signage can be a distraction. Some staff also want photographs that are not dominated by public health messaging. I try to develop portfolios that show the function, process and soul of a BookSpace.
